kmfm's Tonnes of Tins 2025

Kent’s Biggest Food Collection is back!

Can you help us collect Tonnes of Tins for local food banks in Kent?

More people across Kent are turning to food banks than ever before. Between April 2023 and March 2024, Trussell Trust food banks distributed over 3.1 million emergency food parcels across the UK, including 1.1 million for children—a 4% increase on the previous year

This stark reality is playing out locally too. In Kent, some districts have seen food parcel numbers double or more—Swale’s demand has risen 230%, while Sevenoaks has seen a 130% increase in the same period.

In the last 12 months we have seen an unprecedented demand for help, by over 250% and coupled with that, due to the cost of food being so high, donations are down around 28%. We are therefore finding we are having to spend around £700 per month to fill this deficit to feed those in help in our local community. Deal Area Foodbank & Pantry

Food poverty is a growing crisis—but together, we can make a difference.

We’ve partnered with local businesses across Kent to collect and deliver as many “Tonnes of Tins” as possible.

Between Monday 7th July 2025 and Friday 1st August 2025, we plan to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible to donate to 16 Food Banks or services offering Food Banks across Kent. This year, they include

-    Maidstone Celebrate
-    Dover Foodbank
-    East Malling Centre Community Support
-    Family Food Bank
-    Gravesham Foodbank
-    Pie Factory Music
-    The Salvation Army Ashford
-    Tunbridge Wells Nourish Foodbank
-    Swale Foodbank
-    The Trussell Trust Deal Area Foodbank
-    Angy Care Health Foundation Food Bank
-    Maya's Community Centre
-    Gillingham Street Angels
-    Margate Independent Foodbank
-    Repton Community Trust 'Peoples Pantry'
-    Canterbury and District Early Years Project

Last Year on Tonnes of Tins

Approximately 2,400 tins (420 g each) make one tonne. Last year, your generosity helped us reach 9.21tonnes of donations—this year, our mission is to go above and beyond that.

Can we reach 10 tonnes this year?

To help us this year we have teamed up with Tesco, Park Farm Ashford. Their distribution team will be working hard to secure the food stocks, load it onto their fleet of delivery vans and send them to 16 food banks across Kent.

“As the cost of almost everything continues to rise for our listeners and businesses across Kent, we know this year’s Tonnes of Tins campaign will be our toughest yet.
Sadly, there are individuals, couples, and families going without food today because they simply can’t afford it, and many are turning to local food banks for help.
If you're in a position to support us, whether that’s by donating a few pounds, arranging a food shop to be delivered to our studios, or even jumping in the car with colleagues or family to drop off tins in person, we’d love to welcome you. You’ll get to meet some of the presenters, have a look around the studios, and most importantly, you’ll be making a real difference to families in need right here in Kent.”

Can I deliver my donations to you?

This year we ideally want to raise as much through donations via our JustGiving page because that will mean more food being ordered and delivered by Tesco, Park Farm Ashford. We also appreciate that doesn't work for everyone, so you can drop off tins of food to kmfm HQ.

The address is: kmfm, Medway House, Sir Thomas Longley Rd, Rochester ME2 4DU (01634 227800). Please note, office opening times are Monday - Friday 09:00 - 17:00. Deliveries outside of these times may not be accepted.

If you are a listener or a Kent business and do decide to donate in person, come and say "Hi" to the kmfm presenters, who will be more than happy to say thank you and have a photo taken with you.

Can I send an online supermarket shop to kmfm?

Again, we ideally want to raise as much through donations via our JustGiving page, and with Tesco making the deliveries, it would be just the same to donate the money via our JustGiving page.

How long do I have to donate?

Donations for Tonnes of Tins 2025 are between 7th July and 1st August. Any tins delivered after this time cannot be guaranteed to make their way to a food bank.

Can I donate after the campaign?

Unfortunately not. The logistics for the deliveries are huge, so if you can, please donate before 0900 Friday 1st August 2025.

What food banks are you supporting?

Since we started Tonnes of Tins in 2023, we have supported 34 food banks in Kent, and this year we should end up supporting a total of 50 food banks. We hope to support one food bank in each kmfm area.

Do you only accept tin donations?

Ideally, we would like tins of food that contribute to making a meal. Like beans, soup and lentils. As well as bags of pasta, rice, cereals, nappies and long-life food items that are not perishable.

Do you want donations other than food?

Listeners have previously donated items like shower gels and shampoos, and while these will not be turned away, ideally we would like donations to be food.

Do food donations need to be within the best before date?

Yes - any food that is out of date will have to be removed.

Can I donate fresh food?

Unfortunately not. Please consider long-life food items.

What do you do with the donations from Just Giving?

Tesco at Park Farm Ashford have our very long shopping list, and donations are spent on food and supplies with them.
