Programme:
Alfred Schnittke: Suite in the Old Style - 15’
Nadia Boulanger: Three Pieces for Cello and Piano – 7’
Claude Debussy: Cello Sonata in D Minor, L. 135 - 13’
César Franck: Violin Sonata - 27’
We start this recital with Schnittke's Suite in the Old Style. This inventive piece is a collection of genre pieces and was created from a collaboration with film director Elem Klimov on the comedy drama Adventures of a Dentist and the spoof documentary Sport, Sport, Sport. The connection between Baroque forms and modern life can be heard as, taking inspiration from the film Adventures of a Dentist, the cello imitates a dentist drill during the opening Pastorale.
Our recital then firmly sets up camp in Paris and we hear wonderful works by Nadia Boulanger, Claude Debussy, and César Franck.
Nadia Boulanger had a hugely successful career as a conductor, teacher and composer. She entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of nine and subsequently studied composition with Fauré. However, she was very self-critical of her music and it was only when her music was rediscovered decades later that her music has become more widely performed.
Running Time: 60 mins - No Interval
