SMARDEN COMMUNITY STORE: A POSITIVE COVID STORY
In April 2020, one month after the first lockdown began, Smarden Store & Post Office opened its doors and since then has gone from strength to strength. Run by a volunteer Management Committee, part-time Manager, Postmaster and staffed by over 40 volunteers, most of whom live in this rather isolated village, the Store has become a phenomenal success.
The village which has a population of just 1300 is fortunate to have a school, butcher and 3 pubs but it was a bitter blow when the decision was taken to close its post office and store. Undaunted, villagers rallied to raise over £350,000 to build a new store & post office, which would be run by the community for the community.
There are other community-run shops but this store is different:-
· offers a wide range of Kentish produce
· is powered by solar energy
· will have an electric car charging point
· is open 7 days a week (half day Saturday and 9-11.30 Sunday)
· has fresh bread and cakes delivered daily
· has a garden with seating and offers hot and cold drinks for customers to enjoy
· is a hub for the Community
The ethos of the Store has always been to ‘keep it local’ and on Sunday 1st August from 10am to 4pm everyone will have a chance to sample some of the best produce from the Store’s local suppliers at the Taste of Smarden event – there will be something for everyone from local beers and ciders, wine selection, fresh produce, ice creams, bakery, sweets and chocolates, cheeses, plants and flowers and more. An event not to be missed.
