Podcast: Dad, 42, from Newington near Sittingbourne given months to live after skin cancer spreads to brain

KentOnline

Friday, 17 July 2026 - 17 minutes

A Kent dad who's been told he has months to live after skin cancer spread to his brain is hoping to marry his long-term partner and take his family on one last holiday.

Sam Street had been treated for melanoma, but collapsed shortly after moving into a new house in Newington near Sittingbourne earlier this month.

A scan revealed the cancer had reached his brain and his case is terminal.

Also on today's episode, plans to overhaul how councils are set up and run in Kent have taken a big step forward.

It's now been confirmed that when the current 14 local authorities - including KCC and Medway Council - are scrapped, they'll be replaced with four unitary ones.

There'll be known as north, east, west and mid. Hear from Simon Finlay from the Local Democracy Reporting Service, and Vince Maple who is the leader of Medway Council.

Plans to turn an area of ancient woodland near Maidstone into a quarry have moved on.

Bosses at Kent County Council want to use land at Oaken Wood in Barming to meet the growing demand for building materials.

More than 26,000 people have objected and a protest was held outside County Hall yesterday.

A water company's apologised after residents in a Kent village reported a water leak which hadn't been fixed for five weeks.

It comes as South East Water customers are told not to use a hosepipe during the dry weather.

And in sport, there's another pre-season game for Gillingham this weekend.

They welcome Championship side Charlton Athletic to Priestfield tomorrow.

It follows Tuesday night's 3-0 win at Dover which saw the Gills field different sides in each half.
